Hawker Stand Food, Part 2 of a billion or so…sugar cane juice (edited)

This is sugar cane juice.

Freshly made at the Hawker Stand (the ONLY way to get it, according to my in-laws…or it will suck), the Hawker grinds or crushes sugar cane. They take a cane of sugar and squeeze all the liquid out of it…a sugar cane looks almost like green bamboo but as thick around as your wrist. The juice is poured over ice and a lemon slice and lime slice are squeezed in to cut the sugar taste with some sour.  It tastes like very sugary lukewarm water with a tinge of lemon/lime. If it were ice cold and served with slushy type ice, it would probably be great.

We got our at the Tekka Wet Market in Little India.  I think it was sold at multiple stands, but my Father-In-Law went and purchased it for us.  I poured some into E’s sippy cup and gave it to her to try as well.

Neither us really liked it.  Obviously E is too small to put into words other than “yucky,” but I found it really kind of cloying and that it was warm did not help it in the least.  My in-laws said it wasn’t great sugar cane juice and to try it again, but I’m not sure I’m convinced of that.

Well, what does it taste like? I’m imagining luke-warm lemon/limeade. Or maybe it’s thicker and more syrupy than that? I don’t know what cane juice really is. Sounds like it could use some ice. And tequila. Or just tequila and ice and lime, and hold the cane juice 😉

So basically they take a cane of sugar and squeeze all the liquid out of it…a sugar cane looks almost like green bamboo but as thick around as your wrist.

it’s ok but i am not so much a fan of sugar cane juice myself. For green drinks I prefer avacado juice 🙂
