Sponsored Post-QPX hair removal at ONLYaesthetics

Note-This is a sponsored post.  All opinions are mine.  Any promotional information will be italicized.

A few months ago, Moonberry posted about QPX hair removal.  I had said to her that I was fascinated.  I am not a fan of hair on my legs or underarms, and I’ve yet to find a great removal method.  I usually cut myself shaving.  Waxing hurts like hell.  When my MIL introduced me to threading, I said to her that the Indian Army could use it as a torture device and would get answers far easier than by waterboarding or any other method.  I’ve heard of sugaring, but haven’t found a place that offers it locally.  I usually default to waxing grudgingly…unlike back home, there’s no part of the year where you can just be lazy about hair removal as it’s always shorts and tank top weather.

When I was asked if I wanted to try a QPX underarm session at ONLYaesthetics in exchange for a blog post, I said sure.  To be honest, I’d been planning to try it anyway, so I was happy to accept.

I went to the ONLYaesthetics at Singapore Shopping Centre across from the Dhoby Ghaut MRT station.  In typical Crystal fashion I turned to the right from the elevators and went all the way around the floor only to find them immediately to the left of the elevators.  I have awesome powers of direction.

View of the lobby/waiting room from the hallway

As you can see, the waiting room/lobby skews ultra modern and a little funky (I love the light fixture, which resembles a spider if you’re under it) as opposed to “spa”.

I checked in and was taken to a treatment room.  Very clean, very efficient.  I was asked to remove my shirt and put on a robe and some sunglasses (as the treatment uses lasers).  The machine on the left is the laser.

treatment room

sexy, amirite?  I especially love my flat, just washed still drying hair…

The procedure itself took maybe 10 to 15 minutes, probably less.

They shaved my underarms (they said that it’s idea to have shaved 2 days prior for just the right amount of growth in the hair follicle) and then put some gel (think ultrasound gel–I think it *is* ultrasound gel) and then touched a wand slowly around the underarm.  I felt the occasional snap, like a rubber band.  They said the snaps happen when the laser encounters a very thick hair follicle.  Not entirely painless, but significantly less painful than waxing.  It was then repeated on the other side.

ONLYaesthetics posted the following video of the process on their youtube channel.

The aesthetician told me I shouldn’t use deodorant for 24 hours post the procedure (this, I wish I’d known in advance…I’d really like to be able to plan when I won’t be deoderized against the equatorial heat).  The reason she gave was that the chemicals in the deodorant would negatively interact with the light from the lasers, which I was told stays under the skin for 24 hours.  I was a little skeptical, but in order to assess how well it worked, I forewent the deodorant for 24 hours.

I was also told that a side benefit of the process is that it can lighten your skin.  However, I’m white as a ghost, so the only way I’m getting whiter is if I become translucent.  I won’t be able to talk about the efficacy of that claim.

Afterward I was told that I should expect to stay hairless for up to 5 weeks. I have not yet booked a follow up…I am waiting to see how long it lasts compared to waxing to see which method I’m going to ultimately do long term.  But if I like the results, I’m booking another session for underarms and a full leg session the moment I’m back.  It’s not that much more expensive than waxing and not even in the same galaxy in terms of discomfort.  I’m not yet a convert, but give it a month…if I’m still hairless or relatively hairless, I’ll be a dedicated user of the process.

The major benefit of the qpx is that if you do it continuously over 2 years (they recommend every other month, perhaps every month for the first 6 if you have thick hair follicles) the hair removal is ultimately permanent.  As someone who is lazy at heart, the idea of permanent hair removal is pretty awesome.

I’ll let you know when I’m back from the US if I did end up booking another session and what the results are like several weeks out.  At 48-ish hours, there is no re-growth.

ONLYaesthetics offers an a la carte pricing of $25 SGD per session for underarm hair removal or you can buy a 2 year package (with visits every other month) at a discounted price.  As an expat who is here on a non-specific contract (we could be here for years, or we could get transferred to another office at a moment’s notice) I would likely skew conservative and do the a la carte pricing. If you are on a specific contract or are a resident/PR here, I’d obviously go for the money saving package.

ONLYaesthetics also does partial and full leg, facial hair, and bikini hair removal.  They also offer teeth whitening services.

I am so glad it is winter and I don’t have to worry! But it does sound like a good option. I have never attempted waxing outside of eyebrows – way too wimpy. I look forward to the update.

It took me years to do anything other than my eyebrows. Ironically, eyebrows hurt more than some other body parts…not sure if it’s a skin thickness/number of nerves thing or what. But the issue with legs is that it doesn’t matter, it’s such a larger surface area that it’s just like 30-45 minutes of nonstop ow.

      I miss winter.

I agree…threading is torture. I tend to get cuts from the string. Eager to find out how permanent this new method is. Sounds good.

Just reminded of another benefit of winter 😉

      Me too…painless=good.

forgot to mention that I prefer to use an epilator to shaving…feels smooth for longer & there’s an attachment you can put in the freezer to numb the pain. The more I used it the less & less it hurt. so happy that I am saving $ too. but it’s kinda ‘laychay’ (singlish for troublesome & time consuming).

      • Crystal says:

I tried that…I found it hurt more than waxing because it took longer. At least waxing is fast. Why can’t we just check a box that says “yes, I’d like X” or “No, I would not like X”??

I paid $80ish for “unlimited” IPL at a place in Tanjong Pagar plaza, so if you decide to continue you may want to check out Groupon. It’s been OK, although not as quick as I would have liked (I wanted my underarm hair gone IMMEDIATELY and FOREVER!). I am a little patchy now, but that’s a vast improvement on what it was (ick) and I’ll continue going!

    • Crystal says:

      Thank you for the tip!

Like you I’d prefer IMMEDIATELY/FOREVER. How long have you been going, and how often if you don’t mind sharing.

      • KJ says:

I’ve had 3 treatments, which have been about 4 weeks apart. I think with the coupon I bought it was monthly for the first 6 appointments and then bi-monthly for the remainder. They do try and talk you into other stuff (legs, brazillion, etc…) but I just say ‘no, thank you!’. 😉

Thanks for sharing. I’ll definitely look for a groupon. Saving money is always a good thing!
